SIBLINGS ON TOP: Alex Lowes leads twin brother Sam in red-flagged WorldSBK FP3, Bulega only P8
Alex Lowes topped the times in a disrupted FP3 session, with Razgatlioglu and Bulega third and eighth respectively
Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) claimed P1 in Free Practice 3 for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship as he beat twin brother Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) by almost three tenths at Donington Park. The siblings have been quick throughout the weekend and that continued on Saturday morning for the Prosecco DOC UK Round, while Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) rounded out the top three.
Alex Lowes left it late to set his best times in the red-flagged 20-minute session but set a 1’25.354s to claim P1 by almost three tenths, finishing ahead of twin brother Sam Lowes who was second. The #14 posted a 1’25.638s to claim P2 ahead of pre-round favourite Razgatlioglu. After appearing to struggle a little bit on Friday, Razgatlioglu stormed to the provisional top of the timesheets on Saturday morning before being demoted to third by the Lowes twins; his best time was a 1’25.763s, almost four tenths down on Alex Lowes.

Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) was the fastest Yamaha rider as four manufacturers finished in the top four, setting a 1’25.809s to claim fourth. Rookie Ryan Vickers (Motocorsa Racing) made it three Brits in the top five with a 1’26.217s as he continues to impress on home soil. Garrett Gerloff (Kawasaki WorldSBK Team) is another who continues to impress at Donington as he claimed P6 on his ZX-10RR machine. Gerloff’s sixth-place finish made it five different manufacturers in the top six.
Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) found a lot of time compared to Friday as he finished FP3 in seventh place, just ahead of Championship leader Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati). The #11 set a 1’26.309s to finish in P8 despite setting the pace on Friday. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) was ninth with Dominique Aegerter (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) rounding out the top ten.
Andrea Iannone (Team Pata GoEleven) did not set a representative lap time in FP3. ‘The Maniac’ suffered a technical issue on his Panigale V4 R, forcing him to sit out the majority of the session although he was back on track in the last minutes of FP3. There were crashes for Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and Tommy Bridewell (Honda Racing UK) at Turn 1 shortly after Iannone’s tech issue, which brought out the red flags.
